First steps: introducing AI to your class
This page is part of the AI literacy teaching guide for grades 6–12 — the hub that maps three learning tracks for teachers at different stages of building their AI curriculum.
You have been asked — by your department chair, by a district mandate, or by a student who said "can we actually learn about this?" — to introduce AI literacy to your class. You have not done it before, or the one time you tried it felt thin and hard to defend.
This track is the beginning. Not a theory of AI education. Not a philosophy. A sequence you can start Monday.
The five steps below move from a single 45-minute Day 1 lesson to a full introductory unit over three to four weeks. Each step has at least one free or low-cost lesson attached. None of them require student devices, student AI accounts, or any prior curriculum build.
How do you introduce AI to middle school students?

Anchor the vocabulary first — in one 45-minute period.
Before any lesson on bias, ethics, or prompting, students need a shared definition of what AI actually is: a system that finds patterns in data, uses those patterns to make predictions, and gets better as it sees more data. The three-sentence definition is the foundation everything else builds on.

Make the first activity a debate, not a lecture.
The "Human or AI?" icebreaker — where students vote on whether five artifacts were made by a human or an AI — surfaces gut reactions, generates genuine classroom disagreement, and teaches the definition through argument rather than note-taking.

Introduce one concrete skill in the first week: prompt writing.
The CRAFT framework (Context, Role, Action, Format, Tone) gives students a repeatable approach to working with any AI tool they encounter. It takes three days to teach and functions as a writing-process standard they can apply all year.

Use warm-up routines to build vocabulary over time.
Five minutes at the start of class — a term, a real-world example, one discussion question — compounds quickly. Students who encounter "hallucination," "bias," and "training data" ten times in context have the vocabulary to discuss the harder ethical questions in weeks two and three.

Add a substitute-proof lesson for the week you are out.
